Every spring, we get the same call from Valley homeowners: "When should I soft wash my house?" The answer is almost always the same - wait until pollen season ends. In the Shenandoah Valley, that's usually mid-May. Here's why the timing matters and what to expect.
Why not earlier?
March and April in the Valley are pollen months. Trees release a visible yellow dust that coats everything - cars, porches, siding, windows. If you soft wash your house in early April, you'll watch it turn yellow again within a week. That's not a cleaning failure. That's biology. Wait until the pollen drops and you get months of clean instead of days.
The late spring sweet spot
Mid-May through early June is ideal for a few reasons:
- Pollen is done: The heavy pollen producers (oak, pine, maple) have finished. Your clean stays clean.
- Algae hasn't peaked: The Gloeocapsa magma algae that causes black streaks on siding grows most aggressively in summer heat and humidity. Cleaning now removes the existing growth before it accelerates.
- Summer guests: Your home looks its best for Memorial Day, July 4th, and the rest of outdoor entertaining season.
- Longest clean window: A late-spring soft wash gives you the longest stretch of clean siding before fall leaves and winter grime start the cycle again.
What soft washing actually does
