If you live in the Shenandoah Valley, you know what March through May looks like. Everything turns yellow. Your car, your porch, your windowsills, and somehow the inside of your house even though you swore you kept the windows closed. Valley pollen season is aggressive, and it takes a different cleaning approach than the rest of the year.
Keep it out in the first place
The single most effective thing you can do during pollen season is keep your windows and doors closed. That sounds obvious, but the first warm week in March is when everyone opens up the house, and that's exactly when the pollen count spikes. If you want fresh air, wait for a rainy day. Rain knocks the pollen down and gives you a window of a few hours where the count drops significantly.
Your HVAC is your best friend
Run your HVAC fan on "on" instead of "auto" during peak pollen weeks. This keeps air circulating through the filter continuously. Change your filter at the start of pollen season and again at the end. If you have allergies, upgrade to a MERV 11 or 13 filter for the spring months.
Focus on these surfaces
- Window sills and tracks: Wipe these weekly during pollen season, even with windows closed. Pollen finds its way in through seals.
- Hard floors near entries: Damp-mop entryway floors every few days. Dry sweeping kicks pollen back into the air.
- Upholstered furniture: Vacuum fabric furniture weekly. Pollen settles into fibers and gets released when you sit down.
- Bedding: If anyone in the house has allergies, wash sheets weekly in hot water during peak pollen season.
Exterior timing matters
Don't soft wash your house in the middle of pollen season. Wait until late May or early June when the worst has passed. Same goes for window cleaning. We schedule most of our exterior work for after pollen season so customers get the longest possible stretch of clean before fall.
When to bring in help
If you're fighting allergies and the house feels like it's losing the pollen battle despite your best efforts, a deep clean mid-season can make a real difference. We hit all the surfaces that accumulate pollen, the ones you can see and the ones you can't, and reset the indoor air quality for the rest of the season.
