Carpet cleaning advice on the internet ranges from genuinely helpful to completely wrong. After cleaning carpets across the Shenandoah Valley since 2012, we've heard every myth there is. Here are the five that keep coming up, and what's actually true.
Myth 1: Cleaning carpets too often wears them out
This is the most common myth and it's backwards. Dirt is abrasive. Every time you walk on a dirty carpet, those particles grind against the fibers like sandpaper. Regular cleaning removes the abrasive material and extends carpet life. Carpet manufacturers actually require professional cleaning every 12-18 months to maintain warranty coverage.
Myth 2: Steam cleaning causes mold
Hot water extraction (what people call "steam cleaning") uses moisture, and moisture can cause mold if the carpet stays wet for days. But properly done professional cleaning extracts most of the water, and carpets dry within hours, not days. Our bonnet/encapsulation method uses even less moisture. Carpets are dry in 1-2 hours, not overnight.
Myth 3: You should wait until carpets look dirty
By the time carpet looks dirty, it's been accumulating soil for months. The visible darkening you see is just the surface layer. Underneath, dust mites, allergens, and ground-in particles have been building up since the last cleaning. Think of it like changing your car's oil. You don't wait until the engine sounds wrong.
Myth 4: All cleaning methods are the same
They're very different. Hot water extraction soaks the carpet and takes 12-24 hours to dry. Bonnet cleaning (what we use) works from the top down, agitates the soil loose, and encapsulates it for extraction. Dry time is 1-2 hours. Different methods work better for different situations, but they are not interchangeable.
Myth 5: DIY rental machines work just as well
Rental machines use less suction than professional equipment, which means they leave more water in the carpet. They also don't get as hot, so cleaning power is reduced. The result is often a carpet that looks slightly better but takes much longer to dry and still has soil deep in the fibers. For spot cleaning a stain, rentals are fine. For a whole-house clean, professional equipment makes a real difference.
If your carpets are due (or overdue), our carpet cleaning service covers the entire Valley. We use a bonnet agitation system that's dry in hours, not days.
